When Calvin Abueva was traded to NorthPort in that complicated deal — the one that sent Will Navarro and Magnolia’s request to acquire Chris Koon the other way, along with Jerrick Balanza and Aris Dionisio (and if you really want to stretch it, you could even throw in Zavier Lucero, Jio Jalalon, and Abu Tratter) — it felt like The Beast was nearing the twilight of his career.

There was a time when Abueva barely saw the floor under then-Hotshots coach Chito Victolero, reduced to cameo minutes and branded more as a problem child than the MVP-caliber force he once was.

But now, NorthPort has transformed into Titan Ultra — and so has Abueva. I’m not saying his Giant Risers are instant championship contenders, but it’s hard to ignore that The Beast is back to his old, dominant self.

Sure, June Mar Fajardo remains a statistical anomaly and the unstoppable force of the Philippine Cup, but the names behind him deserve their share of attention too.
