So what happens when the winner of Physical 100 and the undisputed king of Single’s Inferno S3 go to some remote Philippine getaway and get offered champorado?
Hmmmm...
Champorado, when made right, is one of the best things ever. I don’t really like to eat tuyo or hawot, because it’s too salty, but I can take the taste for as long as it’s mixed with champorado. And while I am not much of a chocolate person (except when it’s either a cake or an ice cream,) I can eat champorado especially when there is a random kind of milk, and it’s chilled inside a fridge.
This is why I like the way Amotti ate the Filipino delicacy and I cringed at how former Phoenix Fuel Master Lee Gwan Hee pussied out on the taste test.
No surprise, really.
Yes, Filipinos enjoy chocolate on rice... and super-salty dried fish on top of it.
It’s not like I haven’t seen Koreans boil live sea creatures.
Heck, I am a fan of 1N2D, and I have seen many of its members devour newly caught seathings.
But maybe it’s just a Gwan Hee thing. I remember the collection of people Sandara Park has brought to the Philippines, and they enjoyed the hell out of our treats. Hyun Joo Yup became famous for ordering one adult lechon and three orders of grilled squid so he and his coaching staff could feast on them.
The lechon never stood a chance.
And they are still in Laguna for crying out loud. It's not like they were thrown Survivor-style in some remote part of the country, untouched by civilization with no English speakers in sight.
Gwan Hee just transferred to Wonju Dongbu Promy after spending most of his KBL career with the Seoul Samsung Thunders and Changwon LG Sakers. The 36-year-old is averaging 6.5 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in almost 20 minutes of action. His teammates include former Houston Rocket Chinanu Onuaku and Filipino American Ethan Alvano. Onuaku currently leads Wonju with 17.3 points. 11.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.0 blocks. Alvano is second in team scoring with 13.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.5 steals.
Other Filipinos in the KBL include Changwon’s Carl Tamayo, Korea Gas’ SJ Belangel, Seoul Samsung’s Justin Gutang, Seoul SK’s Juan Gomez de Liano, Jeonju’s Calvin Epistola, Anyang KGC’s Harvey Gomez, and Ulsan’s Migs Oczon.
Note: The stats I gathered here came from Real GM as of November 23.
Anyway, I will defend champorado. It’s an awesome porridge from the Spanish times and there are a lot of ways to eat. Yes, two small salted fishes plated as they fell on the porridge may be "fear factor" in nature, but looks can be deceiving.
