NCAA SEASON 101!!!

ree

So I saw this on the Synergy FB page, and I just had to put my thoughts here!

Maybe this is also why I hate that John Barba went undrafted. While my heart is with the Letran Knights (the other Dominican team in Manila alongside my UST Growling Tigers), I’ve also become a fan of the LPU Pirates because of how they’ve been built. Gilbert Malabanan is such an underrated coach, and honestly,

I’m surprised more players aren’t transferring to LPU.

I mean, have you seen their library?

It’s awesome!

For this season, I’ve got five teams in mind for the Final Four. I know the format is a bit complicated, but that just makes the furious finish even more exciting. Letran is souped up with their one-and-dones and the core of their juniors’ team stepping into bigger roles. You can’t discount the Benilde Blazers and San Beda Red Lions either—both squads are loaded with pro-bound stars and rising ballers.

That fourth slot, though, is tricky. I’m torn between the LPU Pirates and the defending champs, the Mapua Cardinals. What baffles me is why some players are leaving Mapua despite already having playing time. Sure, it makes sense if it’s a move from a smaller program to a basketball powerhouse, but Mapua isn’t just any school—they’ve produced three former PBA MVPs. Still, with Clint Escamis, JC Recto, and Marc Cuenco, the Cardinals have the pieces, even if defending the crown won’t be easy.

As for the rest of the league, a few teams intrigue me. The Arellano Chiefs may have lost Renz Capulong, but most of their core is still intact. Perpetual is another sleeper pick, especially with their SMC ties. EAC has talent, but their lack of size might hurt them. JRU will need to dig deep if they want to make a run, and while San Sebastian has Paeng Are, I don’t think he should be the offensive focal point—not when most teams have at least three or four go-to scorers.

Anyway, the season’s about to heat up—who else is excited for some NCAA basketball?
