He didn’t have gaudy stats or headline-grabbing scoring nights, but what Hector Calma brought to the court couldn’t be measured by numbers alone. Nicknamed “The Director”, Calma orchestrated the San Miguel dynasty of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s with calm precision and veteran savvy, helping lead the Beermen to 9 PBA championships, including the storied 1989 Grand Slam. As the trusted court general of legends like Samboy Lim, Ramon Fernandez, Yves Dignadice, and Allan Caidic, Calma earned 3 Mythical Five selections (1987–1989) not for flash but for his unshakable poise, elite decision-making, and clutch playmaking under pressure. Though his career was cut short by injuries, he left a legacy as one of the PBA’s finest pure point guards—an unsung maestro who made every teammate better and every possession smarter.
