A couple of days ago, I vlogged about the 2021 PBA Draft.
I still think the Gilas Pilipinas draft is a bad idea. If the players are that keen to join the draft, then teams need to adapt to their draftee’s dreams. If the PBA is worried that the teams wouldn’t loan the Gilas cadets, then let them sign a contract or merely giving them the “Gilas” tag before the draft proper.
It still sucks knowing how bad they destroyed the mystique of the 2016 PBA Draft. It’s the only draft that never had a top pick. Sure, Ael Banal is listed as the first player drafted but clearly, there are a lot of players with better careers than him. And no offense to some of the Gilas picks but not every player on that list had good PBA careers. Billy Ray Robles, who once played for the Rain or Shine Elastopainters, went undrafted in this draft but had better averages as compared to Fonso Gotladera or Arnold Van Opstal.
Through the years we have had expansion drafts, elevated rosters, and direct hires but the legacy of the draft remains untarnished. How can you rate busts if all of them are top players? And what was the basis of the selections? The suckiest part of this draft is that the selections happened behind closed doors. If you look at the draft order of that year’s draft, TNT had the last pick. Inasmuch as eleven teams could have passed on Roger Pogoy… seeing what he could do now… I mean… what the hell happened?
Anyway, here is the vlog I made.
