THOUGHTS | CJ AUSTRIA'S DEBUT AND THE OTHER THINGS SURROUNDING IT

I saw all the internet chatter about CJ Austria’s game, and honestly, let’s not blow things out of proportion just yet. Yes, he put up 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists, and helped give Pat Aquino his first PBA win as head coach. But it’s also worth noting that Blackwater was missing Dalph Panopio, RK Ilagan, Richard Escoto, and David Murrell in that game.

It’s not like the opportunity isn’t there either. The former DLSU Green Archer and Abra Weaver is in a situation where minutes are available, and even Paul Zamar stepped up in that same stretch, averaging 13 points and 2.5 assists over his last two games.

Still, this isn’t the first time Austria has made a statement. In fact, he was somewhat of a trailblazer when he chose to cut his college career short to turn pro in the MPBL.

Right now, this kind of move feels normal, but back then, it was almost unthinkable. The UAAP and NCAA were seen as the primary spaces for player development, where growth was nurtured and protected. Sure, a player could boost his draft stock in his senior year or final season of eligibility, but once he made the jump, it was a completely different story.

After that, it was like being thrown into open waters—no safety net, no buffer. One moment you’re thriving in a structured system, and the next, you’re a fish swimming among sharks, forced to figure things out on the fly. And if you suddenly realized you weren’t ready yet, there was no going back, no protective barrier to ease that transition.

Austria's stint with the Abra Weavers may not have been as impressive as someone like Dave Ildefonso, but the move clearly worked. He got drafted, and he’s now in the PBA. And to the surprise of many, he is already making noise with a strong debut.

From the moment he stepped on the court, Austria was demanding the ball and looking for his shots. That kind of confidence isn’t typical, especially for a late second-round rookie just trying to find a break. Most players in that position tend to play it safe and defer to veterans, but Austria took the opposite route.

That fearless approach played a big role in Blackwater holding its own against San Miguel, a team that had just welcomed back Bennie Boatwright and was seen as a prime contender. Then suddenly, Robert Upshaw was knocking down four-pointers like they were dunks, Sedrick Barefield was hitting shots at all angles, BJ Andrade was going insane, Zamar was reverting to his old Asian import form, and Austria was doing everything he could to make his one-season deal count from day one.

At this point, CJ Austria is building a reputation around two things: betting on himself and making the most of every opportunity.

And for Blackwater, that’s exactly the kind of player you want—someone who plays with urgency and confidence every time he’s on the floor.

Now, this also raises some questions for Titan Ultra.

I’ve seen the news, and I won’t speculate on the details, but it’s hard to ignore that they once had CJ Austria on a similar deal and let him go. That decision feels questionable, especially for a team trying to build toward the future. Yes, they’re eyeing someone like Michael Phillips in the 2027 PBA Draft, and the class is loaded, but that doesn’t mean you let go of young, promising talent.

You can understand moving on from players who rarely see the floor, like the 39-year-old James Martinez, or even someone like Von Pessumal, who’s in a similar situation to Paul Zamar despite showing flashes in the Philippine Cup.

But letting go of a young player with upside?

Hmmm...

If they struck gold with Bryan Sajonia, there’s no reason to think they couldn’t have done the same with Austria.

As it stands, Titan Ultra’s roster is right there with Terrafirma and Blackwater in terms of struggles. The difference is that they still control their 2027 first-round pick, which gives them some leverage moving forward.

Anyway, I’m not about to say Blackwater is suddenly on fire after one win. They may have just caught San Miguel at the right time, and let’s not forget they also suffered that record-breaking 56-point loss to Rain or Shine.

That said, with the kind of opportunities available in Blackwater, CJ Austria is definitely someone worth keeping an eye on.
