The fans had a tough time when it came to the Bay Area Dragons.

On one hand, they thought it was insane that the team had two interchanging imports. Myles Powell was the super-quick scoring dynamite who would either rock the rim or torch opponents with his long-distance bombs. Then there was Andrew Nicholson, the former Orlando Magic workhorse who punished frontline defenders with his on-court savvy.

I would have wanted the peak version of Duncan Reid, but at this point, he clearly gave Hayden Blankley the green light to go insane with the shooting. And like Reid a decade ago, Blankley also did well on defense. Then you have a scoring ace in Kobey Lam, an able combo forward in Zhu Songwei, and a devil-may-care guard in Glen Yang. The team bounced from one opponent to another until their matchup with Justin Brownlee and the Barangay Ginebra Kings.

This is the other thing about the Bay Area Dragons. They were clearly the enemy that breached the lines, and the fans trooped to the venues just to see them fold. This is why the guest team tag in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup is near-sacred. Aside from the fact that they are seen as villains, they are also perceived to dominate what the league gives them.

In a basketball-crazy country like the Philippines, the fact that one team almost won a championship, with the crowd favorites doing their best to stop them, is one of the most epic showdowns in recent history.
