2025 PBA PHILIPPINE CUP | FINALS STATS

ree

After winning the grand slam in 1989, the modern-day San Miguel Beermen had two real chances to replicate that feat. Both runs happened under coach Leo Austria and his legendary "Death Five" lineup. The first came during the 2016-17 season, and the second in 2019.

But fate had other ideas.

San Miguel didn’t lose the grand slam in the finals. They just never got the chance. Both times, they took a step back while the Ginebra vs. Meralco rivalry dominated the headlines, with Ginebra coming out on top in both cases. In a twist of poetic basketball drama, Ginebra won the grand slam clincher that San Miguel never got to play. Then TNT came along, beat Ginebra twice, and put themselves on the brink of their own grand slam. And in both of TNT's grand slam bids, it was San Miguel who crushed their hopes, both in the finals.

It's almost like a three-way merry-go-round shared by the three best teams of this PBA era.

Ginebra breaks San Miguel via Meralco.

TNT breaks Ginebra.

And San Miguel breaks TNT.

Now that the finals are over, it’s time to check the numbers. Let’s look at the players who went to war for their teams.

On the TNT side, you have to wonder how Almond Vosotros ended up as one of six players who averaged double digits.

Meanwhile, for San Miguel, it’s time to break down how Jericho Cruz earned the Finals MVP nod.

These are the Philippine Cup stats for the San Miguel Beermen and the TNT Tropang Giga.

And as a quick sidenote, that “5G” moniker? It’s really not working. Maybe that was part of the curse. “Tropang GIGA” might sound awkward too, but hey, at least it brought them success on their way to chasing the grand slam.

Anyway, let's get into the numbers.

Game starts now.
