In 1999, Alvarado Segova was directly hired by Purefoods in hopes of injecting talent into the roster, but his PBA stint was short-lived and controversial. After playing in 23 games, Segova was forced to return to the United States when questions about his Filipino citizenship surfaced and could not be resolved.
His departure came at a time when the league was cracking down on “Fil-Shams”—foreign players who allegedly faked or exaggerated their Filipino lineage to gain entry into the PBA. While Segova showed flashes of athleticism, his legacy became tied more to the league’s citizenship controversies than his on-court contributions.
