THE CONSOLATION PRIZE OF FRAN YU

It sucks that this is the final NCAA thing we'll see from Fran Yu.

To think he started out hot in Game 2.

And while it's awesome that most documents are digital, this shows how crappy and misguided the disqualifying foul was.

When John Amores went apeshit on Benilde, NCAA prepared a three-page document JPEG on the suspension and then a double-paged follow-up for his expulsion.

The mere fact that Letran didn't have an explanation for what Yu did is just basically going to the NCAA to request something just for nostalgia purposes.

Yes, Yu is one of the tournament's poster boys but yeah... he is too valuable to be reckless.

The only consolation for Yu is that the suspension will not have any effect on his 2023 PBA Draft application.

As of this moment, Yu is a late first-round pick and he's probably going to stay that way with the possible inclusions of Fil Ams and bets from the UAAP and the NCAA. The main thing working against Yu is that he isn't as big of a scorer. Yes, Yu is clutch but like Ryan Buenafe, Cholo Villanueva, Jec Chia, Dino Aldeguer, Paul Desiderio, and other campus hotshots who missed out on a superstar career in the PBA, this only works if they use you.

The only good thing working for Yu is that Letran players are hot in the PBA at the moment with Kevin Alas, Ato Ular, Rey Nambatac, Raymond Almazan, and Bong Quinto, among others, leading the way. Yu is probably going to have the JP Calvo treatment when he arrives on the scene - which is a good thing, especially with what happened to former superstar Letran Knight Boyet Bautista.

Also, in some ways, the suspension of Yu can help a guy like Tommy Olivario increase his chances of getting picked in the first two rounds. Unlike Yu whose game picked up with the departures of Rhenz Abando, Jeo Ambohot, and Allen Mina, Olivario lost his mojo with Yu doubling on the scoring and with Kurt Reyson evolving into an elite combo guard. Olivario is gunning for his first fourth championship and easily, a great Game 3 will boost his draft chances.

Inasmuch as playing for the SMC squads is a *cough* "dream come true" for most collegiate players, it's hard to play for a team like Ginebra with guys like LA Tenorio, Stanley Pringle, and MVP Scottie Thompson playing in the same position. It will be doubly hard if teams like Magnolia - led by Mark Barroca, Jio Jalalon, and Paul Lee and San Miguel - with players like Terrence Romeo, Simon Enciso, and Chris Ross owning most of the minutes. Terrafirma and Northport are great destinations for Yu although I'm not going to be surprised if teams like Converge, Phoenix, and Rain or Shine try to lobby for his awesomeness.
