THOUGHTS | THAT JAYSON CASTRO MISSED TRIPLE

I watched Game 5 of the 2026 PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals, and while we can't deny how great Justin Brownlee still is, unleashing a career-high 54 points at 38 years old, I also saw what might be the beginning of the end of Jayson Castro's superstar status.

No, I'm not saying he's done. But by the time July rolls around, The Blur will turn 40, and I can see his time in the PBA nearing its end.

While Castro is still a force when he's in his element, you can see that Father Time has begun to cast its spell on his game. I mean, he could have won Game 5 after the RR Pogoy steal and Jordan Heading's brilliant pass.

But instead of making the shot, or even missing it, he missed the rim altogether.

That is so un-Blur-like.

And during the timeout that followed, you could see a defeated smile on his face because, in his prime, he would have made that shot.

With five BPCs and three Finals MVPs, Castro is hands down the best player in league history to never win an MVP award, no thanks to June Mar Fajardo. The dude is clutch personified, and he would never air-ball a game-winner unless he was shooting from the backcourt or taking a heavily contested shot.

Not only was the attempt uncontested, but it was also just beyond the three-point line. And you have to feel for him when Chot Reyes could only wince after the mishap.

It's probably because he understands the situation, and it's not like Castro wanted that to happen.

Ginebra would go on to win Game 5 and is now one victory away from not only dethroning the champions but also finally ending the three-conference losing streak it has endured against TNT.

So does this mean Castro's career is over?

Hell no.

He still finished with six points, six rebounds, six assists, and three blocks in that game. Chot Reyes still turns to him to stabilize things whenever Ginebra puts the clamps on TNT's other players. Hell, he might even go apeshit in Game 6 to make amends for that air ball.

But I can also see him transitioning into a role where he is activated when the need arises, much like Kelly Williams is today. Or like Jeffrey Cariaso or Gabe Norwood at the tail-end of their careers. This could help the team in some ways because it would allow Heading and Pogoy to take on bigger roles while also giving TNT's younger players a chance to develop.

And it's not like we haven't seen this coming for a few seasons now.

Maybe it's just me being in denial, hoping Castro will get one last legitimate shot at an MVP award. Again, June Mar's MVPs are undeniably impressive, but much like how Michael Jordan prevented many of his contemporaries from winning championships, Fajardo's dominance deprived players like Jayson Castro of a much-deserved MVP award.
