UAAP SEASON 89 | POWER RANKINGS | FROM START TO SEPTEMBER 26
So I thought the UAAP would hold games this Sunday.
Oh well.
Anyway, this is my first UAAP Power Rankings for Season 89. As it stands, it feels like most of the teams are on an even playing field. DLSU, UP, UST, and NU are expected to raise hell against their opponents, but I can see FEU, Ateneo, and Adamson surprising everyone since they have won their initial assignments.
Not UE, though.
For a school that once had the talents of Robert Jaworski, Allan Caidic, Jerry Codinera, James Yap, and Paul Lee, this team is bound for gutter hell. They just made a coaching switch, with Chris Gavina getting the boot and alumnus Paolo Hubalde taking the coaching reins.
Basically, the UE Red Warriors are the UAAP's version of the NCAA's San Sebastian Golden Stags.
Anyway, like in previous seasons, the FSAs are the ones dominating the rankings, with Adamson's debuting big man Precious Jonah at the top spot. While Mo Konateh has yet to find his groove in Season 89, Collins Akowe, Francis Nnoruka, and Mo Diassana are back to power the paint for their respective squads.
And oh, by the way, here's another thing I hate about the FSAs. While I have warmed up to their existence, I just don't get the rationale behind having two of them playing one at a time. If they want to make the UAAP a lite version of the B.League and KBL, then just play both of them at once. I feel like it degrades the FSAs, and I think having them play alternately with each other could cost them potential MVP or Mythical Team selections.
JM Edoukou had a massive game for them in their first game, but then he got benched for two games in favor of Olamilekan Ajani? I mean, what is the criterion for choosing one over the other? For me, it just doesn't make any sense.
As for the locals, UST's Amiel Acido, FEU's Kirby Mongcopa, DLSU's Jacob Cortez, Ateneo's Jared Bahay, and NU's Reinhard Jumamoy did well in their first two games.
I am still waiting for reigning MVP Janrey Pasaol to explode. Ditto for Jorick Bautista.
Rey Remogat had a dismal game against NU, and Mason Amos' numbers aren't as eye-popping, but I think we will see these names perform out of their minds as the season wears on.

Okay, so there are 21 names on the list.
Should I re-learn my math?
Well, hear me out.
I mentioned this at the start. Honestly, having two FSAs alternate games with each other, or worse, sit out more games than the other, is unfair to the opposing team and to the FSAs. Automatically, it robs an FSA of the chance to win an individual award because he missed a bunch of games due to being benched.
I think I said this earlier, but I really cringe at the thought of a player getting axed from a spot on a Mythical Team in favor of a player who only played eight or nine games.
And worse, what if JM Edoukou and Olamilekan Ajani suddenly put up Ben Mbala-type numbers?
Are they counted as one player?
And let's remember that, in terms of teams in need of a strong reinforcement, UE is way up there.
Yes, I had to make the list 21 because I just can't stand it.
Anyway, I may expand the list to 25 next week, or just choose one UE FSA to keep things balanced.
